Frangible Surrogate Headform

Frangible Headform

The Frangible Surrogate Headform (FSH) builds on the technology employed in the NATO approved Frangible Surrogate Leg.

The catalyst for this development was a Discovery Channel programme investigating the ballistic effects and forensics of the assassination of President Kennedy. Building upon their existing medical and engineering skills and the knowledge gained in the developing the FSL, the team were able to model the different layers of the head to create a unit that modelled the behaviour of the human skull when hit with a high velocity round.

The ability to colour code the different elements makes post test analysis and high speed film interpretation significantly easier.

This engineered response to high loading rates and impact makes it of potential interest to users worldwide. As well being clinically relevant the FSH can also be instrumented during its construction to provide data on accelerations and pressures within the skull.

The FSH features a mounting that fits to the neck of a Hybrid III Crash Test Dummy. This allows the head to experience the same level of gross displacement that this industry standard neck can provide.
